What is the Political Courage Test?

Iowa Congressional Election 2020 Political Courage Test

Pro-choice Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?
I support a women's right to control what happens with her own body. Reproductive healthcare decisions should be between a woman and her doctor.
Yes In order to balance the budget, do you support an income tax increase on any tax bracket?
Yes Do you support expanding federal funding to support entitlement programs such as Social Security and Medicare?
I support returning income tax rates for extremely high-income people to pre-Reagan levels. We have more than enough funds to meet our obligations if the very wealthy are taxed appropriately.
Yes Do you support the regulation of indirect campaign contributions from corporations and unions?
First, we need to pass a constitutional amendment that will undo the Citizens United decision. We also need to establish public election financing to ensure that money doesn't have undue influence in our elections. A "democracy dollars" initiative could be one way of ensuring that regular low and middle-income people can contribute to the campaign of their choice.
No Do you support increasing defense spending?
Before the recent defense spending increases, we were already the largest and most powerful military on earth, many times over. Defense bills too often serve to make defense contractors even more profitable than they already are but they don't increase servicemember pay or veterans benefits enough. It is possible and necessary to cut the overall defense budget and to also increase servicemember pay and veterans' benefits. Our servicemembers should be paid far more than they are and our veterans should be provided with every resource they need to be successful in civilian life.
Yes Do you support federal spending as a means of promoting economic growth?
No Do you support lowering corporate taxes as a means of promoting economic growth?
Yes Do you support providing financial relief to businesses AND/OR corporations negatively impacted by the state of national emergency for COVID-19?
I support providing financial relief to truly small businesses who are actually suffering during this pandemic, not multinational corporations who, in many cases, have returned the money because they didn't need it. Trickle-down economics hasn't worked and doesn't work. It is time to invest in people, not corporations and the extremely wealthy. We've invested in the very wealthy for at least the last 40 years and it's been great - for them. There has never been more wealth and income inequality and a larger wealthy gap. It's time to start to shrink it.
Yes Do you support requiring states to adopt federal education standards?
There must be basic standards for education, however, teachers and paraeducators must be freed from "teaching to the test" so much. It's taking up too much time and focus. Teaching professionals know their kids best and should be free to teach in the ways they see are most effective. Class sizes need to be smaller, too. We need, most of all, to listen to teaching professionals when we create education policy. We should invest in education so that all schools create equality of opportunity, and provide extra support to schools with a high percentage of children from lower resourced families.
Yes Do you support government funding for the development of renewable energy (e.g. solar, wind, geo-thermal)?
Yes Do you support the federal regulation of greenhouse gas emissions?
I support hard limits on carbon emissions as part of a Green New Deal package that would include subsidies for renewable energy.
Yes Do you generally support gun-control legislation?
I support reinstating the ban on assault weapons, universal background checks and ending the boyfriend loophole.
No Do you support repealing the 2010 Affordable Care Act ("Obamacare")?
Yes Do you support requiring businesses to provide paid medical leave during public health crises, such as COVID-19?
We should have universal paid sick leave and paid parental leave. These should be something everyone has because they live in a wealthy and moral nation. I support legislation that would create a universal single-payer healthcare system, sometimes called Medicare for All. This would help businesses by allowing them to focus on business and decrease their costs. We are losing businesses to Canada because there, businesses don't have to deal with medical insurance.
No Do you support the construction of a wall along the Mexican border?
No Do you support requiring immigrants who are unlawfully present to return to their country of origin before they are eligible for citizenship?
I support making legal immigration easier, faster and less expensive. We should have a worker visa program so employers can legally employ immigrants who are here and are documented. Immigrants are a critical part of our agriculture businesses and farming operations. They are valued members of our communities, both in rural and urban areas of Iowa. We need to make DACA recipients American citizens. We need clearer, faster paths to citizenship for immigrants who want to help make our nation more successful and diverse. Diversity is our strength.
No Should the United States use military force to prevent governments hostile to the U.S. from possessing a weapon of mass destruction (for example: nuclear, biological, chemical)?
Yes Do you support reducing military intervention in Middle East conflicts?
Military force and intervention has not been a successful in preventing hostile powers from obtaining weapons of mass destruction. The JCPOA (Iran Deal) dismantled Iran's nuclear weapons program without firing a single shot.
Yes Do you generally support removing barriers to international trade (for example: tariffs, quotas, etc.)?
While I generally support removing barriers to international trade, we need a larger focus on union and labor rights in any trade deal. We need to listen to those who will be affected and ensure American workers are put first when we talk about international trade.
1. Universal, single-payer health care. This investment can be funded with cost savings over the current model for medical insurance, increasing taxes on the extremely wealthy, repealing the 2017 tax cuts for corporations, and taxing Wall Street transactions. Health care costs overall would decrease significantly. 2. Addressing the climate crisis via the Green New Deal. Investment costs will be offset by new, well-paid jobs and rebuilding projects. Congress authorizes and the Treasury spends. 3. Universal Child Care. Investment costs will be funded in part by people using child care and part by an increase in taxes on the wealthiest individuals.
